Lorem Ipsum is derived from "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil), a philosophical treatise written by the Roman statesman and philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero in 45 BC. The text was scrambled and altered to create nonsensical placeholder text in the 1960s by Letraset, a company that sold dry-transfer lettering sheets used in graphic design.
The Lorem Ipsum text became ubiquitous with the release of Aldus PageMaker desktop publishing software in 1985, which included it as default placeholder text. Today it remains the standard dummy text in the design industry worldwide.
