Free Online Line Numbering Tool

Add sequential numbers to each line of any text with full control over formatting. Choose the starting number (useful for continuing a numbered list), the separator between the number and the text (period, colon, tab, dash, parenthesis), and whether to zero-pad numbers for consistent alignment.

This tool is useful for creating numbered reference lists, adding line numbers to code snippets for documentation, generating SQL or CSV row numbers, or turning a plain list into a numbered one for a document.

FAQ

Can I start from a number other than 1?
Yes. Set the "Start at" field to any number. This is useful for continuing a list that starts elsewhere, or for creating zero-based indexes starting from 0.
What separators can I use?
Any characters — common choices are ". " (period space), ": " (colon space), ") " (closing parenthesis), "\t" (tab), or " - " (dash). The field accepts any text up to 5 characters.
