Remove image backgrounds for free using AI
ExperToolBox's background remover uses the RMBG-1.4 AI model from BRIA AI, running entirely in your browser via WebGPU and ONNX Runtime. Upload any image and the AI automatically detects the subject and removes the background in seconds — no subscription, no watermark, no data upload.
Unlike web services like Remove.bg or Canva that process your images on their servers, ExperToolBox runs the entire AI model locally in your browser. Your images never leave your device. This matters especially for confidential business photos, personal portraits, and any sensitive visual content.
How it works
The tool uses a semantic segmentation neural network that identifies the main subject in the image pixel by pixel and generates an alpha mask — a grayscale image where white areas represent the subject and black areas represent the background to be removed. The mask is then applied to the original image to produce a transparent PNG.

What types of images work best?
The AI performs best on images with a clear subject separated from the background: product photos on plain or simple backgrounds, portrait photos, animals, vehicles, and objects. It also handles more complex backgrounds reasonably well. Very detailed backgrounds with similar colours to the subject may produce less clean results.
FAQ
Why does the first load take a while?
The AI model (~25MB) needs to be downloaded once from the Hugging Face CDN. After the first load it is cached in your browser and subsequent uses are instant.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no hard limit, but very large images (above 4000×4000px) may be slow depending on your device's GPU and memory. The model resizes images internally for processing and the output is at the original resolution.
Can I use the results commercially?
The processing tool is free. Commercial use depends on the licence of the original images you use — make sure you have the rights to the source images.
What is RMBG-1.4?
RMBG-1.4 is an open-source image matting model developed by BRIA AI, available on Hugging Face. It uses a hybrid architecture combining transformer and CNN layers trained on a large proprietary dataset of diverse image types.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes, but performance depends on your device. Modern flagship phones with dedicated neural processing can handle it in a few seconds. Older phones may take 10–30 seconds. The model automatically falls back to CPU if WebGPU is not available.
