How much tip should you leave?

Tipping customs vary significantly by country. In the United States, 15–20% is considered standard and tipping is virtually mandatory as servers rely on tips for their income. In the United Kingdom, 10–15% is customary for good service. In Spain and most of Continental Europe, tipping is optional — rounding up or leaving 5–10% for good service is appreciated but not expected. In Japan and some Asian countries, tipping is considered rude or confusing.

In general, consider: 10% for adequate service, 15% for good service, 20% for excellent service, and 25%+ for exceptional experiences or when you want to show extra appreciation.

Splitting the bill fairly

The simplest approach is to divide the total (including tip) equally among all diners. This works well when everyone ordered roughly similar amounts. When there are significant differences — for example, one person had only a salad while others had steak — consider splitting based on what each person actually ordered, then adding a proportional tip on top.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should the tip be calculated before or after tax?
In the US, tips are typically calculated on the pre-tax amount, though many people tip on the full post-tax total. In Europe, prices already include VAT, so you tip on the displayed total. This calculator uses whatever amount you enter.
What if someone didn't drink alcohol?
If drinks significantly inflate the bill, it's fairest to subtract the drinks total first, split the food equally, then add each person's drinks back. Use our calculator for each scenario and compare the amounts.
Is tipping included in the bill in Europe?
In some European restaurants, a service charge (servicio) may be added automatically — check your bill. This is usually 10–15% and replaces the need for an additional tip. If no service charge is shown, tipping is optional.
